SAFARIPROGRAM: ZIMBABWE / BOTSWANA / ZAMBIA / NAMIBIA

The following tours are proposals for safaris with Gertie’s Lodge / Victoria Falls as a
starting point.
The tours can be combined with each other and can be individually changed.

Tour 1: One week Zimbabwe
  1. day)
    Arrival Victoria Falls and transfer to Gertie’s Lodge Afternoon Boats cruise on the Zambezi river. Relax in this beautiful environment whilst drinks and snacks are served. Watching animals and a fantastic sunset over the Zambezi river. Dinner, Bed & Breakfast Gertie’s Lodge.

    Today you can individually design your own program. White water rafting, upper Zambezi canoeing, Elephant riding or a scenic flight over the falls either by helicopter, fixed wing aircraft or microlight can all be organised, but you can also just relax in the beautiful garden of Gertie’s Lodge. Dinner, B&B Gertie’s.

    After breakfast proceed with safari programme. Should the group want to do the Botswana safari afterwards, we will spend the 6th night in Hwange NP and proceed to Botswana the next day, using the bush border post at Pandamatenga on the road to Chobe NP.

    We return to Victoria Falls. Dinner, B&B at Gertie’s Lodge.
  7. day)
    Return flight or proceed with safari programme. Should the group want to do the Botswana safari afterwards, we will spend the 6th night in Hwange NP and proceed to Botswana the next day, using the bush border post at Pandamatenga on the road to Chobe NP.

This includes overnight in a twin tent/ room, all gamedrives, entry fees, full board on safari as well as dinner & breakfast at Gertie’s Lodge.


Tour 2: One week Botswana

  1. day)
    Arrival at Gertie’s Lodge in Victoria Falls. In the afternoon drive through Kazungula border post to Chobe NP in Botswana. Guests who continue from Safari 1 will drive direct form Hwange NP through Pandamatenga border Post to Chobe NP.
  2. day)
    Early morning game drive through Chobe NP, wonderful sceneries along the banks of the Chobe river. This park has the highest population of Elephant in southern Africa. Lions are very common. In the afternoon a 3hour boatcruise on the Chobe river, with spectacular impressions of the animals on the banks and in the river. Often Elephants can be watched crossing the river to one of the numerous islands, Hippos and crocodiles are abundant, the bird life is magnificent.
  3. day)
    We proceed through the Chobe forest and reach Savuti, the “marsh of the predators”. A lot of animals use the few water holes for drinking and in the night around the campfire we listen to the sounds of the animals, not always far away...

    We drive through heavy Kalahari sand to the Okawango delta and put up camp in the Moremi NP. This park, in the middle of the rivers, streams and lakes of vast delta offers a unique landscape and numerous animals live here. On our gamedrives we always see something new and the surroundings are overwhelming.

    Today we drive to Maun, the provincial capital on the edge of the delta. Here we have the opportunity for a scenic flight over the delta, a possibility to see the real extend of the vast water wilderness beneath.

    Flight to Johannesburg, Windhoek or Victoria Falls or proceed to Namibia (Tour 3)

Tour 3: One week Namibia

  1. day)
    Arrival at Maun ( 8th day of Botswana tour), transfer to camp and possibility for a scenic flight over the Okawango Delta.
  2. day)
    Drive around the delta to Shakawa at the “pen handle”, and cross the border into Namibia. Camp at Bagani on the bank of the Okawango river.
  3. day)
    Excursion into the beautiful situated Mahango NP. A lot of animals come from the sands of the Kalahari to drink from the clean water of the Okavango. This park is famous for its large population of Sable antelope. For adventurous people we can try to organise a canoe-tour on the Okavango in the afternoon.
  4. day)
    At Divundu we cross the Okavango river and drive into the Caprivi Strip. The border to Angola is only a few meters away. We reach the second clean river coming from Angola, the Kwando. This river has build a similar delta as the Okavango in Botswana and the impressive landscape is similar. In the Caprivi West NP, which stretches over 300km from the Okavango to the Kwando, we build our camp right at the bank of the Kwando river. This is a real ‘insider tip’ away from the tourist stream. The animals are rather shy as they are not used to people, but we approach them carefully and have on occasions seen Elephant herds of several hundreds, even thousands. This river is also the source of the Savuti marsh, which has been dry for several years and is by air only 50km away, and lots of animals are crossing into Namibia to the permanent waters of the Kwando.

    We proceed to Katima Mulilo, the provincial capital of the Caprivi strip. From here we drive through Botswana back to Victoria Falls or continue with Tour 4 into Zambia.

Tour 4: One week Zambia

  1. day)
    Arrival Victoria Falls, visit the Victoria Falls, dinner, B&B at Gertie’s Lodge. Participants of Tour 3 drive directly into Zambia at Katima Mulilo and proceed to Ngonje Falls on the upper Zambezi river.
  2. day)
    Drive through Livingstone/ Zambia and continue to Ngonje Falls. Here the Zambezi awaits us with white sandy beaches, cascading waterfalls and rapids with completely different impressions then at the Victoria Falls area.
  3. day)
    Swimming and relaxing at Ngonje Falls, a boats cruise is planned, provided the boat is in tact and fuel available. Fisherman can try for the fighting tigerfish.
  4. day)
    We proceed along the Zambezi to Mongu, where we cross the river. After some hours we reach the Kafue NP, where we turn left from the main road into northern part of the park. We camp right at the Kafue river. The park varies from gallery forest along the river bank to dense bush and vast marshes, home for thousands of Lechwes. The large predators are praying on these and are abundant. Here we have the possibility for night game drives in open vehicles, a wonderful opportunity to maybe see some leopards stealthing their nightly pray. Also lions are on the hunt, followed by hyenas. The river is home to thousands of hippos and crocodiles and large herds of elephants and buffaloes can be seen.

    Gamedrives in the Kafue NP

    Participants which have booked the  following Tour 5  will stay another night in the camp and proceed to Lusaka the next morning. Otherwise  we drive through the southern part of the Kafue NP and cross the dam wall of the Kafue dam, a hydroelectric power-station. Camp in the Kafue South NP.
  7. day)
    Proceed to Livingstone and into Zimbabwe/ Victoria Falls. Dinner, B&B at Gertie’s Lodge.

This includes overnight in twin tent / room, all gamedrives, entry fees and full board, as well as the boat cruise at Ngonje Falls, if possible.


Tour 5: 10 days Zambia / Malawi

  1. day)
    Arrival Lusaka, transfer to our camp, situated in a nice animal park in the outskirts of the town. Guests arriving from Kafue NP will also camp there.
  2. day)
    At Chirundu we meet the lower Zambezi and turn down river before we the Zimbabwe border. On the way to the Lower Zambezi NP we cross the Kafue river on a exciting ferry. We camp on the banks of the majestic Zambezi river, up to 3km wide and slowly finding its way through sandbanks and islands. The fauna is rich and on several gamedrives we will trace the animals.

    Gamedrives in the Lower Zambezi NP
  4. day)
    Today we break camp very early and drive to the escarpment of the Zambezi. Through endless serpentines up and down we reach the top of the escarpment and the main road to the east. We reach the Luangwa river bridge, where we stay overnight in beautifully situated cabins above the Luangwa river.
  5. day)
    Today adventures guests have the opportunity to canoe the Luangwa river, crocodiles and hippos ensure that the trip is exciting. An experienced guide accompanies us.
  6. day)
    Today we proceed on the great east road to Petauke. Here we turn into the bush and before long we reach the Luangwa river again. Along its bank we approach South Luangwa NP. This is Zambias most famous NP and has been well documented in several books and films. On several gamedrives we will observe the animals, which are abundant. Again there is the possibility of a night drive in open 4wheel drive vehicles, surely worthwhile to track down predators and other noctorious animals.

    Drive through Chipata into Malawi. Through the capital Lilongwe we reach the lake with its crystal clear waters. Our Camp at the lake is situated on a fish-station, from where the famous ornamental Malawi Cichlides are shipped all over the world. While snorkelling and bathing in the clean water, we can observe the fish in their natural habitat.
  9. day)
    Relaxing, bathing and snorkelling at the beach. For interested persons a lovely boat-cruise can be organised, if the lake is not too rough.
  10. day)
    Drive to Lilongwe and return flight, or drive back to Lusaka ( 2 days) or Victoria Falls.

Tour 6: One week “relaxing in Zimbabwe”

  1. day)
    Arrival in Victoria Falls and transfer to Gertie’s Lodge. In the afternoon a relaxing ‘ Sundowner Cruise’ on the Zambezi river. Watch the animals and a marvellous sunset on the river, while drinks and snacks are served. Dinner, B&B at Gertie’s Lodge.
  2. day)
    After Breakfast visit of the mighty Victoria Falls. Afterwards enjoy your tea on the terrace of the famous Victoria Falls hotel with a splendid view into the gorges below the Falls. After lunch we drive to lake Kariba, where we spend the night in lovely chalets on the bank of the lake. This man made lake stretches for nearly 300km along the Zambezi valley and on its Zimbabwean side several national parks and game-areas are situated.
  3. day)
    After early morning tea we will embark on our houseboat, our sanctuary for  the next few days. We have breakfast on the sun deck, while we are approaching the vast expanses of the lake. We sleep in comfortable double cabins, but who likes it, can also sleep under the stars on the upper deck. On the sun protected area on the upper deck we have our freshly prepared meals, also the bar is situated here.           Showers and toilets are on board and if it is too hot, a plunge pool is awaiting us on the foredeck, surrounded by deck chairs. In a quiet bay we anchor. From here we make our game drives with small motorboats we carried along. Plenty animals are coming to the shoreline to drink and old elephant bulls are standing in the water to graze the soft water vegetation. Plenty of hippos and crocodiles live in the lake, and the cry of the mighty fish follows us everywhere. Fishermen can try their luck for the fighting tigerfish ore the tasty bream, delicious if freshly prepared in our kitchen.

    Much too fast the days in this lovely paradise are ending and we return to Binga, our starting point and harbour. We drive back to Victoria Falls , diner, B&B at Gertie’s Lodge.

    This morning is free, scenic flights, shopping for souvenirs etc. can be arranged. Afternoon return flight or continue with your program.
